Behind a discreet glass frontage on Scott’s Road sits one of Singapore’s most famous and popular restaurants: Les Amis. Serving up an inviting blend of classic and innovative French dishes, the restaurant is also known for an impressive wine list, with an in-house cellar valued at around five million SGD. Running along the side of the Shaw centre around five minutes’ walk from Orchard MRT you will find a row of restaurants owned by Les Amis group including a wine bar, Vietnamese and Japanese restaurants and the jewel in their crown, the eponymously named, Les Amis.
For a restaurant with so many awards there is very little fanfare and you could easily walk past the restaurant and not notice it. Inside the decor is stylish but simple, a subtle palate of cream and gold with a beautiful band of red wallpaper running around the main dining room. This theme is very similar to many Michelin starred restaurants in Paris or London, and helps to keep the focus and the colours on the plate. In another nod to France there are beautiful, gold, Louis XIV-inspired chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.
The space is intimate with the main dining room seating only thirty, but the restaurant also has a private dining room with a glass window that offers a direct view of the kitchen, perfect for an cozy dinner for six people.
At dinner, you can choose from the Les Amis Experience set menu, which is available in either four or eight courses. The current menu includes dishes such as marinated baby yellow tail with piquillo pepper, white tomato pasta with octopus and Iberico pork tenderloin ‘sous-vide’. The restaurant also serves a selection of innovative signature dishes which can be included in any of the set menus. Amongst the most popular dishes are juicy wagyu cooked in French hay and served with broccolini and truffled French fries or baby monkfish, roasted whole on the bone and easily enough for two people.
Those with a sweet tooth won’t be disappointed either with attractively displayed choices including a tarte tatin with hazelnut and sherry liquor or coconut surprise, a deconstructed Thai-inspired dessert with lime, basil and mango.
There are around 2000 wines to pick from but if you are not a wine buff, never fear, the sommelier selects around a dozen wines served by the glass to complement the changing menu, and the staff offer their knowledge in a helpful and friendly manner. Wine pairing is taken to another level with their Simply Black lunches, where the wines are drank ‘blind’ from black glasses, allowing the sense of smell and taste to take over. If you still have room at the end of the meal, there is always the opportunity to peruse the cheese trolley. Les Amis keeps the fine-dining tradition alive by allowing you to of select your slices at your table from a greater choice than most restaurants.
With great attention to detail in the food, wine and service, Les Amis restaurant is the perfect place to visit as a treat, and spending an evening here would be an ideal way to celebrate a special occasion. Both lovers of French food and fine wines will be well looked after here. Don’t let the unassuming facade outside put you off, what happens in this kitchen is truly magical.
